What is this mysterious creature? Is it a relative of the much publicized Montauk Monster that washed up on Montauk Beaches in 2008? Or is it just a raccoon or an opossum that is bloated and disfigured from decay? You decide.

This creature was found by a family walking on Rockaway Beach about 30 feet from the water line.

The Montauk Monster

Montauk Monster #1 Found in 2008

If you are not familiar with the Montauk Monster allow me to introduce some conspiracy-like theories that surround the creature, where it was found and its possible relationship to close-by animal bio-testing facility on Plum Island.

From Wikipedia: “The story began on July 23, 2008  Jenna Hewitt, 26, of Montauk, and three friends said they found the creature on July 12 at the Ditch Plains beach, two miles east of the district.

“We were looking for a place to sit when we saw some people looking at something… We didn’t know what it was… We joked that maybe it was something from Plum Island.”-Jenna Hewitt
A second Montauk Monster that washed up in 2009. No one really knows what animal this is.

Speculation in published reports included theories that the Montauk Monster might have been a turtle without its shell — even though a turtle’s shell cannot be removed without damaging the spine nor do they have teeth as appear in the photograph—a dog a raccoon, or perhaps a science experiment from the nearby government animal testing facility, the Plum Island Animal Disease Center.

The creature’s appearance was believed to have been altered through immersion in water for an extended period before coming to rest on the shore, making it difficult to identify.” Wikipedia

“William Wise, director of Stony Brook University’s Living Marine Resources Institute, discounted the following general possibilities:[15]

  • Raccoon – the legs appear to be too long in proportion to the body.
  • Sea turtle – sea turtles do not have teeth, and the body cannot be removed from the shell without doing damage to muscle and skin tissue and the spine.
  • Rodent – rodents have two huge, curved incisor teeth in front of their mouths.
  • Dog or other canine such as a coyote – the prominent eye ridge does not match the creature’s feet.
  • Sheep or other ovine – sheep have two-toed hooves, not multi-toed paws.” -Wikipedia
Opinions Vary:
Darren Naish  a science writer, technical editor and palaeozoologist believes that this is nothing more than a racoon. He  gives the illustration below to demonstrate how the carcass would look before and after decay. Plum Island Animal Disease Center (PIADC)

From Wikipedia: Plum Island Animal Disease Center (PIADC) is a United States federal research facility dedicated to the study of animal diseases. It is part of the DHS Directorate for Science and Technology.

Since 1954, the center has had the goal of protecting America’s livestock from animal diseases. During the Cold War a secret biological weapons program targeting livestock was conducted at the site. This program has been the subject of controversies and conspiracy theories.

TruTv and Jesse Ventura did a great 4 part series of the mysteries and potential government cover-up of the Plum Island facilities. The second one is most informative on its relationship to the Montauk Monster. See here:

Plumb Island and Lyme Disease

Other websites and articles point to the lack of protection and security  at the Plumb Island facility.  Lyme disease is thought to some to have been an tick-related  experiment gone wrong that leaked into the general population.

From wonkette.com

(Plumb Island) was a military base through World War II, after which it was taken over by the Department of Agriculture for the isolated study of livestock viruses such as foot-and-mouth disease and anthrax. But the work at Monster Island turned dark in the early 1950s, as Cold War biologists were told to create horrors to set loose upon Soviet agriculture and even Cuba’s tobacco crops.

In 2004, the New York Press noted the still-unexplained 1975 appearance of the first cluster of patients suffering from a tick-borne disease in the woods of Lyme, Connecticut — right across Long Island Sound from Plum Island itself.

Eric Traub and Lyme Disease

Dr. Erich Traub was a Nazi germ warfare scientist allegedly smuggled
into the United States in 1949 from the former Soviet Union under the
auspices of the top secret United States government program Operation
Paperclip.[1] (at Plumb Island).

Former Plum Island lab director Jerry Callis
talking about tick research on Plum Island:

“Plum Island experimented with ticks, but never outside of
containment. We had a tick colony where you take them and feed them on the virus and breed ticks to see how many generations it would last,
on and on, until its diluted. Recently they reinstated the tick
colony.”-from: http://sci.tech-archive.net/Archive/sci.med.diseases.lyme/2007-08/msg00037.html

Lyme Connecticut for which the disease was named is 10 miles due north of Plumb Island.

Plum Island and the Possibility of Human Testing

“PLUM ISLAND, N.Y. (WPIX)— An alleged mutated human body washed ashore on Plumb Island, a small island where the U.S. Government typically studies dangerous animal diseases.

A security guard on foot patrol reportedly discovered the clothed decomposing body Thursday afternoon on the southwest beach area of the island, where access is restricted, police said.

The body was described as that of a white male about 6-feet tall with a large build and “very long” fingers. According to authorities, there were no obvious signs of trauma.”

This article from the nypost.com claims that it was a black male with long fingers. http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/body_found_on_plum_island_near_disease_Iv5J57bvkx1N7ucT1d6PMM

From TruTv.com Only known Photo of Long Fingered Man being Carried out by men with Bio Hazard Gear On

From TruTV.com

“Police were called to Plum Island in January, 2010. A human body—a mutated human body—had been found by workers on the island. The official police report described “very elongated fingers.” The body had no identification. Moreover, five symmetrical holes had been drilled into its skull. At first, Suffolk County police said it was the body of a white man.

A day later, they changed their story and claimed it was a black man. To date, they have offered no explanation for the two conflicting reports, except to say it was an “oversight.”

So conspiracy or no conspiracy. The legend and mystery lives on right here in Rockaway. Montauk monster or just a raccoon. What do you think? Please let us know your comments!
